Day 1: Drive to Gheralta and Trek to Abune Abraham
After breakfast in Mekele, drive about 100km to the base of the Gheralta Mountains. Start trekking: a 1.5-hour hike to the old church of Youhans Maqudi. Continue trekking (3–4 hours) to the colorfully decorated, 7th-century church of Abune Abraham. Descend to the base camp (2 hours). Overnight: Camping in a village under a big tree.
Day 2: Trekking to Mariam Papsite and Korkor Base
After breakfast, continue trekking, admiring the wonderful views, wildlife, and traditional Tigray houses. Visit the church of Mariam Papsite. Continue trekking to the base camp (about 4 hours). Overnight: Camping in a village called Korkor.
Day 3: Trek to Gheralta Summit & Churches, Drive to Mekelle
After breakfast, continue trekking, admiring the wonderful views, wildlife, and traditional Tigray houses. Visit the church of Mariam Papsite. Continue trekking to the base camp (about 4 hours). Overnight: Camping in a village called Korkor.
