Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How fit do I need to be to trek the Simien Mountains?
Moderate fitness is enough for our 3–4 day treks. If you can walk 5–6 hours a day on hilly terrain, you’ll be fine. For Ras Dashen (4,550m / 14,928ft), we recommend regular hiking practice in the 2 months before your trip. Altitude — not distance — is the real challenge.

What about altitude sickness?
All our itineraries are designed with proper acclimatization. We sleep at progressively higher camps (Sankaber 3,250m → Geech 3,600m → Chennek 3,620m). We carry pulse oximeters, supplemental oxygen for emergencies, and Diamox is available. Symptoms usually resolve with rest and hydration.
Is Ethiopia safe to visit in 2026?
The Simien Mountains, Gondar city, and Bahir Dar have remained safe and operational throughout recent years. We monitor regional security daily through local networks and the Ethiopian Tourism Office. We will never run a tour into an area we wouldn’t take our own families.
Is it safe for solo female travelers?
Absolutely — about 35% of our solo trekkers are women. Female guides are available on request. Our scouts (armed park rangers required by law in Simien National Park) accompany every trek.
What's included in the price?
Park entrance fees, mandatory scout, professional guide, mules for luggage, all meals during trek, camping equipment (tents, sleeping mats, mess tent), bottled water, and ground transportation from Gondar. Not included: International flights, Ethiopian eVisa ($82 USD), travel insurance, alcohol, tips, and personal sleeping bags (rentals available $5/day).
What about toilets and showers on trek?
Camps have basic long-drop toilets. Showers are not available on the mountain (we provide hot water for washing each evening). Ras Dashen lodge has indoor facilities.
Can you accommodate vegetarian, vegan, or halal diets?
Yes. Our cook prepares delicious vegetarian Ethiopian cuisine — shiro, misir wot, gomen, atkilt wot — naturally vegan and ideal for trekking energy. Halal and gluten-free options confirmed in advance.
Mobile coverage and electricity?
Ethio Telecom signal works at most camps (intermittent). Bring a power bank — we charge devices via solar panel at base camps.
What's the tipping etiquette?
Suggested tipping pool: $10–15/day per traveler, split among guide, cook, scout, and muleteer at the trek’s end. We provide envelopes and guidance.
