March is the quiet shoulder at the end of the dry season – and right now (March 2026) it’s one of the best-kept secrets for serious trekkers.

Current conditions (what I’ve seen on recent treks):

  • Landscape is golden-brown but the cliffs and escarpments are crystal clear – no haze, perfect for photos.
  • Nights still cold (down to -5°C at Chennek) but days warm and sunny.
  • Crowds? Almost none. We had campsites to ourselves last week.
  • Road from Gonder to Debark: Checkpoints in the morning only – smooth and safe with our local drivers.
    Wildlife right now
  • Gelada troops are everywhere (hundreds at Sankaber). Walia ibex are climbing the cliffs. Ethiopian wolves (~60-70 in the whole park) are hunting in the early morning – we spotted three different individuals on the last two 4-day trips. March is prime because the rodents are active after dry-season breeding.

3 pro tips

  • Bring a light scarf for dust on the drive – and for the coffee ceremony smoke!
  • Ask your guide to time the Imet Gogo viewpoint for 6:30 am – the light is magic and the geladas are still sleepy.
  • After Ras Dejen or your final day, we always stop at a Gonder family home for a private coffee ceremony and injera. It’s the perfect way to reflect on the Roof of Africa.
  • The park is stronger than ever after UNESCO’s boundary work. This March window gives you the Simien experience without the high-season rush.
